Keflavik International Airport

Most tourists coming to Iceland will arrive at Keflavik International Airport. Therefore it is important to know, that you should book your rental car pick-up from Keflavik International Airport, and not Reykjavik if you want your car straight from the airport.

Some people do however opt to pick up their car in Reykjavik after their arrival, and therefore choose to take the Airport Shuttle into Reykjavik. If you want to start your journey of exploring Iceland straight away, we do recommend booking your car for pick-up at the airport.

Keflavik International Airport is located around 30 miles (49km) from Reykjavik city center and the journey takes between 45-50 minutes, depending on the time of year and traffic. It is also a common misunderstanding to confuse Reykjavik Domestic Airport, located in the city center of Reykjavik with Keflavik Airport. Unless you are travelling to Iceland from Greenland or The Faroe Islands, you will most likely land in Keflavik, and not Reykjavik. Other international airports are Akureyri in the north, and Egilsstadir in the east coast of Iceland.

It is also possible to book a car from Keflavik (or Reykjanesbaer) town center, just make sure you select the appropriate location for pick-up when you book your rental car. It is possible to type in the desired location in the search widget.

Keflavik or Reykjanesbær as it is now known as after a 1995 merger with the nearby towns of Njarðvík and Hafnir. As of 2022 the population is over 21.000 people. There are many wonders of nature to be explored in the areas around Keflavik, and you should not miss going to the Blue Lagoon that is situated a short 20 minutes drive away from the airport. Why not get rid of your travel fatigue by charging your batteries in the Blue Lagoon and take advantage of the spa facilities.
