A multi-day tour hands over the driving, the route and the hotel bookings: a seat in a coach or small van, a guide who knows which road closed overnight, and a bed booked every night. What Is Included and What Is Not

Nearly every multi-day tour covers transport for the whole route, a guide who usually drives, and accommodation each night. Some include breakfast, a few include dinners, most leave meals to you. Flights and the activities at each stop are extra, so a glacier hike or ice cave visit is an add-on picked at booking.

Accommodation standard varies more than anything else. Unless a listing states hotel rooms with private bathrooms, assume guesthouse level with shared facilities. Single travelers pay a supplement for a room alone, charged per night.

Short trips run east along the south coast to the glacier lagoon in the south east. Four day tours add Snaefellsnes or a push up to northern Iceland. The ring road is about 800 miles (1,300 km) of paved highway and needs at least seven days without spending every daylight hour in a seat. The interior is summer only: mountain tracks open in stages through June and close from mid September.

Guided or Self-Drive

The tradeoff is that winter road conditions become your problem: from November to March you are the one reading the closure map and judging black ice. Take the guided version if you are here in winter or if nobody wants to drive.
