The volcanic situation on Reykjanes
The Reykjanes peninsula has entered a new volcanic era: twelve eruptions since 2021, first in the Fagradalsfjall valleys and since late 2023 along the Sundhnúkur crater row near Grindavík. The most recent ended in August 2025, and there is no eruption underway at present, though magma continues to gather beneath Svartsengi and the Met Office expects the cycle to continue. Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon are open. Tours visit the fresh lava fields and the best legal viewpoints, adjusting routes to current conditions, and during an active phase a helicopter offers the view nothing on foot can match.
